Feeder - We Are The People
|
![]()
Feeder are back with the first single from forthcoming album Silent Cry. It's been seven years since their breakout hit, 'Buck Rogers', and that's a long time in pop. In that time the teen Kerrang! readers that favoured them so avidly have grown up and it seems Feeder are trying to follow suit with a grown-up song. Sadly they fail. 'We Are The People' may keep hardcore fans happy but its methodic guitars and processed vocals really lack anything for the listener to latch on to. The track is at home on the album - but as a stand-out single, it'd decidedly lacking.
Portishead - The Rip

Weve got Portisheads number by now, havent we? Theyre never going to be grappling with Alphabeat to be the first band to actually make your teeth rot with the power of sugary music, but neither are they dull as ditch-water. The Rip in fact confounds expectations, strumming in with acoustic campfire guitar and Beth Gibbons trilling like a folkie about white horses taking her away. Its all rather bucolic and old-fashioned. Of course, halfway through, a Kraftwerkian synth riff hums in and takes the tune somewhere else entirely, and we realise we cant pin the trio down at all. Good.
